Although Ivan was not part of the directing crew he gave some useful points and we took into consideration his advice and help. Ivan's personality is very similar to Troy, as they are both popular, loud, tough and bossy so was easy for him to act out and play the role effectively.

Magazine Cover: Planning and Magazine Analysis

Magazine cover is part of the many sections for this media coursework along with the film trailer and the film poster. Before I make my front cover for my magazine I need to research on other Film magazines and see how they are so effective. The film magazines I have researched were Empire, Total Film and Sight and Sound. To analyze front covers on film magazines I need to write about the image, the layout and the content. This whole analysis will help me be more prepared towards creating my film magazine front cover relating tomy film trailer for my coursework.





The image on Empire magazine usually holds its own footage. Empire magazine use one main image of the character in the film they are covering. The image of the character is very iconic for example, this Stars Wars character is playing around like the character would do in the film. What is special about this picture it gives out a 3D effect when it is in front of the Empire Logo and the tongue is sticking out.

The content of the magazine is brief and catchy. In this magazine the wording is just the title and catchy phrase at the bottom. there isn't a lot of content around the magazine which rarely happens on magazines. What is special about this is edition is the quote at the bottom saying, "how wude" which you don't usually see from film magazines.

Layout: With this layout relatively not a lot is on this magazine. Most Layout is filled with text around with the image in the middle. Whereas, This layout is framed in gold and that could show that this magazine edition is limited or exclusive. With the text it is only shown at the top and bottom unlike most magazines having the text on the sides as well as the top.

With this unique film magazine the image is very distinctive image. This is image is on Clint Eastwood and the shot the magazines took on Clint Eastwood is Close up shot showing himself from head to shoulders.


The layout of Sight and Sound magazine is familiar to the big film magazines. Firstly, you can see the title is not directly in the middle like most magazines are. whereas, the title of this magazine is placed on the left. The colours that is placed on this magazine are average. They still have their original colours of yellow,black and red on the title box and on other side the bar code and other details. These colours are not a distraction to the black and white image of Clint Eastwood.


The content of this magazine is very formal unlike the 'Stars Wars' Empire magazine. It has some of the font bold showing the reader the important content of the magazine.

The layout of this image is was very intriguing to me because of the style Total Film made. The newspaper cover relates well to the whole theme of the film from Superman.

The context with this magazine edition is very formal taking the ideas off a newspaper. For example, the article "Superman Returns" is catchy which newspapers use to draw in their readers, especially on the front of a newspaper.

The image in this magazine is iconic in the sense of the film because this is the outfit Clarke Kent (Superman) would wear for a disguise. With the glasses and the hat hiding his true identity .

This image looks to me that they have taken this in the studio specifically for this magazine cover. You can see that he is posing by the way he is standing and holding his weapon. The meaning of the image for me is that the character is showing no fear holding the guns and is very serious for what he is about to do.

The content of this magazine is very straight forward because there are only a few words. The movie title stands out the most because it is bold and has its own layout to make it special. The other content is about other movies and other persuasive skills to lure the reader in. They leave to content short because they have the rest of the information inside the magazine for the viewer to read.

Media Essay "The Blaire Witch Project"

'The Blair Witch Project' is a very unique horror film because of it is set out as a documentary but it still create's fear towards an audience. 'The Blair Witch Project' has pioneered a new sub genre into the horror genre bringing both docementary and horror into one film. The film has the same techniques as other horror films bringing monsters or people with a serious mental disorder and brings a pschological theme by making them lost in the forest thinking how to escape the horror scene. Through this essay i will be talking about the rules of the genre, the narrative of the film such as filming with a hand held camera, film techniquessuch as point of view shots, iconography, how they distribute the film and how 'The Blair Witch Project influenced towards my trailer.

The rules of the horror genre are to try and change your emotions to fear and make you jump and startled during the jump scenes. The way 'The Blair Witch Project' relates with the horror genre is by filming it as a documentary format/style to make it more realistic. 'The Blair Witch Project' has imagination of the creatue but makes it more realistic by getting public to speak out about the monster, to make the flim creepier to the audience. This bring chills into an audience spine because the public is speaking about casually in person so it leave the viewrs second guessing thinking is this true or just a fantasy.


The way the narrative of the film works with the genre of horror is by making it realistic as possible to still bring fear to viewers and not to make it as an American blockbuster film. First of all the narrative of the film is to make it a documentary of the film is about the footage of the film found but the people that created the footage have not been found. In the open scene that shows this dialogue, the audience start to be more curious of what this film has to offer and with leaving the audience second guessing of what going to happen will make them more anxious to what's to come.

Although, 'The Blair Witch Project' film techniques are very clever and unique than other horror films because it makes the film look natural, it only uses two types of camera (handheld camera to film their own and also the filming camera for the film). You don't see this a lot in the horror genre because most horror films won't generalise who the camera man is so most films want to be professional wheras, 'The Blair Witch Project' wanted to make it amateurish to bring more realism to the film. Another technique they used is the black screen effect. This bring a scary mood to the audience because loosing sense like your eyes is quite scary and also you will need to use your other senses trying to figure out what is going on.

The iconography in the film 'The Blair Witch Project' are the scariest and could leave fears in the back of your mind. For example, in the film the woman found some teeth on the floor the day after their friend goes missing. You would see this sort of sinister ideas from a horror films to make the audience scared thinking they are real and thinking it's their friends teeth. Aonther example that made me get shivers down my back would be the evidence people gave in the town that came true through the film. This is very familar towards horror films when they leave clues to the missing puzzle of the mystery in the end of films. For example, 'Scooby Doo' use this method in every one of their episode and this relate to horror films because Scooby Doo is a cartoon version of horror films relating the same monster or actions in other horror films. So this gives the audience more of an understanding through the film not missing anything out for example, one town member talked about the house and it came true, another would be a person standing in the corner, one person stated and another said the Witch leaves rocks around the next person it kills but these are just beliefs and rumours. This I found scary because the movie makes you believe it is real but it was just actors acting but they made so realistic.

The marketing of the film is not the same as other films. For one, you don't see the creature so they won't merchandise toys or custumes for Halloween so have missed out on making childish figure. On the other hand, they have made the website about the film further so it makes people shiver when they think about the film again. The website gives you so much it's hard not to think "was that real, id that really happen". Further information like the history of the 'Witch' and the situation between the last footage and the period of turning it into the movie. The point of the website is to keep the movie alive in people mindsand also market the DVD at the same time.

Narrative Structure

Inciting incident: When T sees Kenny's diary and finds out that his roommate is fanatically obsessed with his girlfriend Ash.

Protagonist: Kenny in the protagonist in the beginning. However later in the story, Ash becomes our protagonist as story is told from her point of view.

Objective: Kenny gets the girl he is in love with.

First act/ Second act transition: The couple going off to the woods.

Internal Obstacle: Kenny is not as popular as T. He is shy, timid and his personality is stopping him from getting the girl of his dreams.

External Obstacle: Troy. He is confident, aggressive and popular. He is everything a girl lie Ash wants.

Climax: Kenny is chasing the couple. Troy decides he doesn't need Ash and is not willing to die because of loving her.

Dramatic Answer: No (Kenny does not get the girl)

Twist: Ash find out about Troy's betrayal. She decides to take control over the situation and becomes stronger and independent of Troy. There is a protagonist shift from Kenny to Ash.

Ash's objective: She doesn't want to be with either of them. She want a revenge.

Third act: They are in the forest, chasing around, trying to kill each other.

Third act climax: Ashley pretends she loves Kenny in order to survive. She helps him kill Troy. At the end she kills Kenny.

Dramatic answer: Yes. Ashley achieves her objective to survive and get out of the forest.
